This is the second film in the Disney fairies franchise (and my personal favorite!) While the first film focused on the change from Winter to Spring, this movie centers on the transition from Summer to Fall, with all its bright and brilliant colors. The plot follows Tinker Bell who is chosen to create this year’s blue moon scepter, which is used to create blue pixie dust which, in turn, helps rejuvenate the pixie dust tree. Her friend, Terence is eager to help her with this task but during an argument the scepter (and subsequently the blue moonstone) shatters. This prompts Tinker bell to go on a journey to uncover a magic mirror which is said to grant a wish. She intends to use this wish to ask for another gemstone. The animation in this film is quite beautiful- it has the same style as the first but with more slightly more polish (and pixie dust!) The sprawling skies and lands Tinker bell flies through on her journey are gorgeous and truly expand the fairy world. It is nice to see Tinker Bell go on a, mostly, solo journey as she has to rely on her resourcefulness (and the woodland creatures’ kindness) to secure the magic mirror in order for her to wish for another moonstone. Terence is truly a great friend (clearly wishing to be more than a friend) to follow Tinker Bell to “farthest corner of Neverland” to help her, breaking the rules on the amount of fairy dust allotted for her (extra scandalous being that he is a dust fairy). I wish he was in the film longer as I think Tinker Bell’s journey- both literal and metaphorical ( the later in realizing her problems were of her own making not Terence’s fault) would have been helped along with a speaking character (Blaze the firefly is adorable but his squeaks are more annoying than amicable. Additionally, its odd no one else noticed Tinker Bell’s absence but Terence- she had the most important job after all I would imagine they would keep her under a tight watch! Overall, I think this is the best movie in the franchise. It is a great adventure, with the obligatory friendship lesion of forgiveness. It also has great visuals and a cute “friendship” between Terence and Tinker Bell. I only wish Terence were a bigger part of the franchise moving forward instead of being relegated to a background, largely non-speaking role. This franchise could use more prominent male main characters.
Final Rating: 7/10
