This is the fourth movie in the Disney’s Fairies franchise and, like most of the others, was only in theaters for a limited run before going to DVD. The plot centers around Zarina (Zee), a pixie dust-keeper fairy who wishes to unlock the secrets behind pixie dust and their different properties. This leads her, after a massive accident, to be expelled from her position and leave pixie hollow. She later runs into a band of pirates, among those a young captain Hook, and becomes their leader. She returns to Pixie Hollow to steal the blue fairy dust so she can make th pirates’ ship fly so they can pillage the mainland. The animation style has changed to a softer computer animation style, with fewer details emblematic of a common trend throughout children’s digital media during the past decade. Zee is a cool character who asks very logical and interesting questions about pixie dust which is the fabric of fairy society. She does get carried away and should have learned to moderate her curiosity. I also enjoyed the inclusion of Periwinkle and the other Winter Fairies from the previous film who perform as part of a show for all the summer fairies. This show doubles as a showcase for Zarina’s newfound pixie dust knowledge. The movie also expands upon the Peter Pan mythos by elucidating the origin of Captain Hook, his flying ship, and the ticking crocodile. The voice cast was fine like usual, though I laughed at the inclusion of Tom Hiddleston as the voice of the young Captain Hook! Overall, besides some superfluous and nit-picky questions with the fairy lore, I enjoyed this film about as much as I did Secret of the Wings, but less than the first two films in the series (which I will review in the future).
Final Rating: 5/10
