This is the first of two sequels to, Aladdin. It was the first direct-to-video film released by Disney, to mixed- negative reviews but was a financial success and started a roughly decade long trend of releasing direct-to-video films to successful recent and classic films. This movie also served as the pilot to the Aladdin animated TV show that ran for three seasons from 1994-1995. Jafar is back, having been inadvertently released by a smarmy and idiotic thief, Abis Mal. He vows revenge on Aladdin for the events of the first film and manipulated his new master into aiding him in this pursuit. This premise could have been interesting, as Jafar is a great villain. Indeed, he is the best part of this film. He is successful in his plans until his fatal flaw, pride, undoes him yet again. The rest of the cast, however, does not fare so well. They seem to be simplified, watered down version of their original selves, save Iago, who actually goes through a somewhat compelling redemptive arc from a disloyal snake to a heroic savior and friend. Aladdin has reverted to a part time thief and lies to jasmine again. Jasmine appears to be merely a lovesick lover with little spine. The Genie is unfortunately not voiced by Robin Williams in this film due to contract dispute and thus lacks his original spunk and endearing nature. Additionally, the animation quality is poor and while there are a few added songs they are not as good as the originals and fail to be memorable. Overall, this is a blatant cash grab and easily skippable.

Final Rating: 3/10
