This film was a surprise box office hit for Disney and resulted in Disney’s first theatrically released sequel, The Rescuers Down Under, in 1990. It tells the story of a pair of mice who are part of a United Nations adjacent organization whose mission is to rescue kidnapped children. It is a simple story (although it is never explained why children are the only ones who understand the animals… but not all animals) with likable characters and great action sequences. The villain is a bit dumb and her goal could have been easily obtained without the kidnapping of a young girl. But, without the inclusion of the young girl there would be no plot and we would not have met the lovable stars of the movie, Miss Bianca and Bernard, and their wonderful relationship. Regardless of its inexplicable plot, The Rescuers is overall likable and entertaining, and I unexpectedly enjoyed it and look forward to watching its sequel.
Final Rating: 7/10
