Most people believe this to be the worst film Pixar has ever released, but I tend to disagree with that assessment. At worst, I think it is not as bad as people say, at best it is an average film, certainly better than say, A Bugs Life, if only for its animation. In the film, Lightning McQueen and Mater head to Japan and Europe to compete in the World Grand Prix, but Mater accidentally becomes sidetracked with international espionage, becoming entangled in a villainous plot for world domination. The globetrotting adventure aspect is well done with the overseas locales of Japan, Italy, France, and England beautifully rendered. The spy aspect is an interesting idea and actually works for the most part. Unfortunately, I would have preferred the racing be the focus as it the core of this franchise and provides much need thrills and drama all on its own. Ultimately, though, what lets this film down is the overuse of Mater. He is great in small doses as Lightning McQueen’s best friend, but he cannot carry a film. His idiotic and grating personality is magnified to the point where he is no longer endearing. He truly did mess things up for everyone, I cannot even feel sorry for him. Yes, McQueen was a bit harsh, towards him but Mater honestly deserved the tough love. Additionally, the introduction of “lemons”, certain models of cars who are prone to breaking down (through no fault of their own… which raises questions that certain cars are essentially born better than others, but I digress) was a great concept. Their plan for world domination, however, was comical. Make everyone dependent on oil that they own by exploiting a preplanned flaw in the renewable fuel? Why not give themselves upgrades instead? Would have been a more interesting and less outlandish idea. Despite these two issues, Cars 2 manages to be moderately entertaining and, while not a spectacular film, it is by no means terrible or unwatchable. It is simple average for Pixar, which means it is still heads and shoulders above the majority of other animated films with intriguing concepts and great animation quality (and another great soundtrack from Michael Giacchino).
Final Rating: 5.5/10
